Famitsu Scores Super Smash Bros. Brawl a Perfect 40Posted 3:02pm Wed Jan 16, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Nintendo, Nintendo Wii, Famitsu, scores

If you're one of those "Famitsu is god" gamers who keeps a close eye on what the most popular Japanese gaming magazine is playing (and scoring), then here's a tidbit for you.

Apparently Famitsu reviewers really, really like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as they scored it a perfect 10 across the board - that's 40/40 points. In other words, Super Smash Bros. Brawl has just become the beacon of perfection for all Wii and non-Wii games alike, topping even the likes of Super Mario Galaxy at a cozy 38/40.

I bet that'll sell some Wiis, delay or no.

Here are comments from the four Famitsu reviewers as translated by 1up (I assume):

"This time around even the 1P mode is massive. Adventure Mode will entertain you for quite a long time, and the story's presentation is excellent. In versus mode, the Final Smashes add more uncertainty to battles; you can have a wilder match than ever regardless of skill. Hats off to the ample control and sound options as well."

"Final Smashes-one of the new elements to the game-dazzle, exhilarate, and heat up the battles more than ever. The content-rich 1P mode is aces, too. Movies and action in 'Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary' move at a good clip; I completely lost track of the time. Loved it!"

"Compelling presentation and gimmicks, plus dynamic and subtle character motions. You have GOT to see these over-the-top Final Smashes. Lots of versus stages, and the 1P mode is very fulfilling. A stage editor and the ability to browse detailed game data are also pluses."

"The all-stars in this roundup bound across the screen with polish. The game comes complete with a mode that will suck you in even if you're by yourself, and more than enough hooks to stir up the collector within you. This is a supreme game that oozes superior technology, sensibility, and effort. Each play yields new discoveries, and each versus battle offers welcome doses of joy and dismay."

Eidos Reduces K&L Fake Rating Complaints to 'Eidos Bashing'Posted 1:57pm Tue Dec 04, 2007 by Shiva Stella Tags: editorial, eidos interactive, scores, kane and lynch, jeff gerstmann

Hey, at least our star is real.

While gamers and gaming journalists everywhere are currently in an uproar regarding GameSpot's firing of Jeff Gerstmann over a poor review score for Eidos Interactive's Kane & Lynch: Dead Men (you can check out our own review here), what's interesting is that Eidos itself has refrained from commenting on the K&L fiasco.

In particular, the company's blatant graphical lie about the game's review scores, which we noticed were preview quotes paired with star rankings that didn't exist (GameSpy was recorded as having given the title a five star rating when the actual review issued three stars; similarily, Game Informer was recorded as issuing a five star rating when it scored the title a 7/10, which is funny because Game Informer doesn't even use a star system).

While Eidos Interactive has remained quiet on the issue, the company's PR trolls have been hard at work handling the damage control on various Kane & Lynch "fan" sites, including this one, which contains a post in which an "Eidos Official" comments that, indeed, those cheeky five stars weren't meant to be viewed as scores because obviously it's common practice to issue star ratings for game previews. Here's the full quote:

One of the sites quoted gave us a score of 7, however it still showed 5 stars. Reason why? they were not actually supposed to be seen as a score. Yes i know you are all gonna say `pull the other one`. However look at the facts (which people seem to ignore), those quotes and stars have been there since the page launched, before ANY review code or scores were received. So the only reason they are being picked on now is cos its fashionable right now to hate us and bash us and everyone is scaling the wall trying to find something new to bash us for.

FYI this is my personal thoughts and opinions and should not be seen as an official comment in any way shape or form.

In the words of our own Aaron Dunlap, who broke the original story, "Silly us for thinking that a star near a review had something to do with reviews giving stars."

What's infuriating about this "graphical misrepresentation" of game scores that don't exist is that Eidos would "forget" to remove the intentionally misleading star graphics and then explain away the fans' negative reaction to being outright lied to as simple Eidos bashing - "bashing" Eidos apparently being the hip thing to do.

What's even more hilarious is that while the stars have since been removed from the official site's splash introduction, the site still parades preview quotes around as though they were the official "review" word on the title.

In other Eidos news, the game's official Eidos forum has been unlocked and is now available for posting. At one point an Eidos admin actually responds to a fan's statement that "they [the stars] are MEANT to be misinterpreted so that people will be misled into thinking K&L is a better game than it is and [buy] it" with:

You mean this is an [advertisement] that is not quite scientifically based? Wow, I never thought I would see the day an advertisement tried to sell me something.

Read: it is peachy to outright lie about your game's review scores if you can get away with labeling them as "design decisions". Thanks for the heads up, Eidos.

Game Dev Accepts Responsibility for Blacksite: Area 51 Posted 2:00pm Thu Nov 29, 2007 by Shiva Stella Tags: Blacksite Area 51, Harvey Smith, scores, Midway

It's rare that a developer who pushes out a lackluster game will actually address the issue and what went wrong with the title, but Harvey Smith, developer behind Blacksite: Area 51 and who also worked on the original Deus Ex, commented on the game's low scores at a recent games summit.

Prepare for some R-rated language, children. Expounds Smith:

This project was so fucked up…Everyone was forced to share tech. It took eight months to get one thing working…With a year to go, the game was disastrously off rails…it went straight from alpha to final.

Smith went on to explain that once his team had completed a level they only had four days to fix it with necessary adjustments, which he called "completely reprehensible". Though Smith believes in "personal accountability" and accepts the blame for his role in the title's (in-complete) creation, he also feels that Blacksite: Area 51 deserved a rating in the 80/B range due to the game's satirical narrative. Perhaps it would have made for a better book?

Here's the scorecard from metacritic. As far as our opinion of the game goes, we wouldn't know because Midway has yet to send over a copy for us to experiment with. Still waiting...

Iranian President Ahmadinejad Rates Call of Duty 4Posted 5:49pm Thu Nov 15, 2007 by Shiva Stella Tags: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Call of Duty 4, scores, tv spot
Simply because I couldn't resist, here's another advertising spot for Call of Duty 4, this time featuring a game review by Iranian President Ahmadinejad.

He recommends the title for "any warlord looking for some new ideas on upgrading their armed forces' destructiveness" and scores it ten scimitars.

New Assassin's Creed Trailer, Same Groovy Music, Oh and ScreenshotsPosted 9:48am Fri Nov 09, 2007 by Shiva Stella Tags: Assassins Creed, Ubisoft, PlayStation 3, screenshots, Xbox 360, scores, video

Ubisoft has published another official trailer for its Assassin's Creed, set to launch on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 13 (available Nov. 14). Scores are beginning to trickle in, but at this point there are only two of them as follows:

  • 100 - GamesRadar: "With its riveting story, beautiful visuals and surprisingly lifelike world, Assassin's Creed is an incredibly deep, enjoyable game that kept us addicted from beginning to bizarre end."
  • 95 - Game Informer: "Its stunning visual style, high concept story, and wildly open level design are like nothing else, even if too much repetition begins to frustrate in the later hours. It’s a game people will still be talking about five years from now."

Check out the trailer at the jump. It's got the same groovy music you should be used to by now.

[Update] New screenshots are also available, viewable here.

Scores for the PC version of quite possibly the most popular Xbox 360 title - Gears of War - are officially going up today. As usual, we've got a convenient listing below for your viewing and mathematical pleasure.

Current average as of 11/06: 88%

  • 90 - GameSpot: "The PC version of Gears of War is everything the 360 version was and more." (video review link)
  • 90 - PC Zone UK: "The PC version of Gears of War is a welcome reminder of how much better PC gaming can be, and that it can do big, stupid action way better than the consoles that took stupid to the masses." (sounds like somebody's jealous)
  • 85 - GamerNode
  • 80 - GameDaily
  • 80 - GameTap

I don't know - seems a little jaded to me. Any of you considering a purchase of the PC version?
