The Sims Tops 100 Million Units SoldPosted 9:24pm Thu Apr 17, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: the sims, pc, ea

Will Wright's army of simulation games has changed the face of PC gaming over the years, but few games have had the impact of The Sims, which he unleashed back in 2000. Being the top-selling PC franchise of all time and having amazing longevity (The Sims 2 and its expansions are consistently at the top of PC software charts every year), it has now passed another milestone, as EA announced yesterday that the game has sold over 100 million units.

Rod Humble, Head of Studio for the Sims Label, had this to say:

"At this milestone, we want to thank players of The Sims everywhere for making The Sims such a worldwide phenomenon. The Sims has been an interactive experience for people around the globe to explore their passion for creativity and we're thrilled to be a part of that. From building houses and relationships, from first kisses to a toddler's first step, from kitchen fires - and even visits from ghosts, players have told more than 100 million unique and fun stories!"

Funcom Announces Preorder Goodies For Age of ConanPosted 10:11pm Wed Apr 16, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: age of conan, pc, funcom, screens, preorder

Funcom is busy gearing up for next month's release of Age of Conan, and today they announced that the MMO will have its share of preorder extras for gamers in North America, Oceania, and Europe. These include in-game items such as war mounts and weapons, retailer-specific items like game guides, and access to the game several days early for five dollars.

From Morten Larssen, VP Sales and Marketing of Funcom:

"We are very pleased with the reception Age of Conan has had in retail and we naturally hope that the early interest and our early access programs will materialize in an eventual success. The positive indications are naturally an honor, but they also bring a great responsibility. As we prepare the roll-out, we know our servers will be put to the test. We therefore hope potential players will aid us by signaling their interest as soon as possible so we can scale our servers and services accordingly.”

Spore Release Date Announced: 9/07/2008Posted 1:37pm Tue Feb 12, 2008 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: Spore, Maxis, EA, Will Wright, release date, PC, Mac, Nintendo DS

After something like a 42-year development cycle and 100 gameplay presentations from Will Wright, Spore finally has a release date.

Via a very brief teaser video posted on the Spore website, EA has announced a confirmed release date of September 7th, 2008 for the PC, Mac, and Nintendo DS.

"The wait is almost over," Chief Designer Will Wright said in a press release. "We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year."

The seven months until release gives plenty of time for conservative, religious, and parents groups to get up in arms about the "pro-evolution" content of the game.

Resident Evil 5 Due in 2008... most likelyPosted 1:07pm Mon Feb 11, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: Capcom, Resident Evil 5, interview, Chris Kramer, release date, rumor

Here's a little something interesting for Resident Evil fans this morning. According to the latest podcast featuring Chris Kramer, Senior Director of Communication and Community for Capcom (I imagine that he handles the hate mail and forums), over at Major Nelson's place, it's highly possible that Resident Evil 5 will see release this year.

And I quote:

We have a really fantastic year ahead of us... a year that's going to include games like Bionic Commando, Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV is going to be making its arcade debut next week in Japan. We've got a new game that we're working on in the US called Dark Void...

If you'd rather skip the radio-like melodrama you'll find the above comment at the 30.00 mark.

THQ Confirms Red Faction 3 for PS3, 360, PCPosted 7:45pm Tue Feb 05, 2008 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: Red Faction 3, Volition, THQ, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC

During an investor-related conference call, THQ let slip the news that Volition is hard at work now on a new sequel to Red Faction, a series that hasn't seen an entry since 2003's Red Faction II.

The original Red Faction was a pretty big deal on the PlayStation 2 with its GeoMod engine featuring destructible environments. Red Faction II received less fanfare but was pretty good. Since then, however, Halos and Calls of Duty and Gears of War have come along to push the FPS envelope.  Here's hoping that Volition, who've been busy with Saints Row, is able to keep up.

THQ expects the game to release late 2008 or early 2009.

EGM Says Dead Rising 2 Being Made In US, Not By CapcomPosted 2:23pm Tue Feb 05, 2008 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising, Capcom, EGM, 1UP

According to 1UP, the next issue of EGM will contain a rumor, courtesy of rumormonger Quarterman, that Dead Rising 2 is being developed in the US -- not by Capcom (though Capcom would surely be publishing it).

To me, this is great news (if it's true news). All of the things that I didn't like about Dead Rising (the complicated, unfriendly save system, the ridiculous plot, the crummy menu interface, annoying support characters telling you what to do, lots of reading) are trademarks of Eastern game design. I would like to see Dead Rising done with a more Western flair, perhaps some kind of system where the main character can stick to walls and shoot around corners...

The rumor doesn't say which Western developer would be/is doing it, other than that they're LA-based (who isn't?).

Halo Wars On PC? Uhh.. NevermindPosted 12:44pm Thu Jan 31, 2008 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: Halo Wars, PC, Xbox 360, Tiberium, RTS, Halo

Yesterday we mentioned a rumor that the upcoming Halo strategy game, Halo Wars, might be appearing on the PC. Forget it.

Kotaku contacted Microsoft for a comment, and the idea was quickly squished. Sayeth MS:
Halo Wars" is being developed from the bottom up for the Xbox 360 and its control scheme to ensure that we deliver a groundbreaking console RTS experience. Given that, we have no plans to develop "Halo Wars" for Windows Vista at this time.

Oh well.

Obvious Rumor: Halo Wars Coming To PCPosted 10:22am Wed Jan 30, 2008 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: Halo Wars, PC, Xbox 360, Tiberium, RTS, Halo

Two games I'm looking forward to this year: an FPS (Tiberium) based on an RTS franchise (Command & Conquer) and an RTS (Halo Wars)  based on a FPS franchise (Halo). Halo Wars has been looking pretty good in recent gameplay footage, but in my mind always had the disadvantage of being a console game.

Console RTS games can occasionally be adequate compared to their PC counterparts, but are rarely as good or better. Halo Wars has always been treated as an Xbox 360 exclusive, but we'd always hoped it'd make its way to the PC with keyboard/mouse control.

Gaming site The Angry Pixel is carrying the rumor that our wild guesses are accurate. Microsoft wants to expand their Games For Windows... concept, and a game like Halo Wars is a sure bet for that.

Like most "news" in this industry, this is just a rumor. Like most "rumors" in this industry, it's probably true.
