Konami Ships Off a Bevy of New Games, MGS Collection IncludedPosted 3:36pm Tue Mar 18, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: List in Blue 3, Metal Gear Solid The Essential Collection, Diary Girl, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, Konami

Konami confirmed this morning that the company has shipped three new games nationwide, headlined by Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for the PlayStation 2.

The collection retails for $29.99 and includes the original PlayStation's Metal Gear Solid (as a PS2 disc), MGS2, and MGS3 with package artwork by series artist Yoji Shinkawa. You can view order details here if you're interested.

Following The Essential Collection comes Diary Girl for the Nintendo DS--the game functions as a PDA-lite and "provides girls of all ages the ability to interact with friends through their own customizable avatars, as well as organize a calendar and address book in their own password-protected electronic journal." Sounds spiffy.

And remember, ladies: it's not a game, it's a "lifestyle accessory". I'm going to keep that in mind any time I buy anything. Diary Girl retails for the standard $29.99.

And finally, add Lost in Blue 3 for the Nintendo DS to the list.

In Lost in Blue 3, players guide one of two stranded characters, each with their own personal history, through exotic locales on a mysterious island while surviving the elements to stay alive. Players can work alone or cooperatively with other characters to gather food, explore the island and hunt dangerous wildlife. Completing one character's storyline will unlock the storylines of two additional characters, allowing players to explore the island in different ways, experience new storylines, and uncover different endings.

Lost in Blue 3 also retails for $29.99.

Spore Release Date Announced: 9/07/2008Posted 1:37pm Tue Feb 12, 2008 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: Spore, Maxis, EA, Will Wright, release date, PC, Mac, Nintendo DS

After something like a 42-year development cycle and 100 gameplay presentations from Will Wright, Spore finally has a release date.

Via a very brief teaser video posted on the Spore website, EA has announced a confirmed release date of September 7th, 2008 for the PC, Mac, and Nintendo DS.

"The wait is almost over," Chief Designer Will Wright said in a press release. "We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year."

The seven months until release gives plenty of time for conservative, religious, and parents groups to get up in arms about the "pro-evolution" content of the game.

Assassin's Creed DS Gameplay Footage: I Feel AsleepPosted 12:52pm Thu Feb 07, 2008 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: Assassins Creed Altairs Chronicles, Assassins Creed, Nintendo DS, Video

Since its announcement, Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles has been kept pretty close to Ubisoft's maternal chest, odd for a game that could conceivably be such a big deal.

Well here's some gameplay footage. Do not watch while operating heavy machinery.

I guess the minigame shown near the end to pick pockets looks pretty interesting. It appears you scratch out the screen to reveal the contents, then have to drag the thing you want out of the pocket like a medieval game of Operation.

Nintendo Announces New Cobalt/Black Look For DSPosted 11:42am Fri Feb 01, 2008 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: Nintendo DS, Nintendo, DS Lite, Colors, History, Portables

Beginning February 10, a newly colored Nintendo DS (Lite) will go on sale. Creatively called "Cobalt/Black," the new scheme is a combination of cobalt and black. The brief press release stretches a little far to say it's "like a black t-shirt with a splash of color," but it does look kinda nice.

Believe it or not, this is the seventh color iteration the DS Lite has seen, after Polar White, Coral Pink, Onyx, Crimson/Black, and a limited-edition Gold/Metallic Rose version.

Nintendo sure knows where the money is: colors. Nearly ten years after the original GameBoy had launched and was technically inferior to more recent products like Sega's Game Gear, they launched their "Play It Loud" campaign with the technically identical GameBoys now coming in a handful of '90s-appropriate neon colors, and they sold millions.

Since then, they've tended to release their portables in a small number of colors at first then slowly trickle out new colors one by one.  I suppose they did that for the GameCube, too. "Limited Edition" Platinum, huh?

Remember the first GameBoy Advance? One of the launch colors was called Glacier, which implies blue, but it looked purple. That was fun, carrying around a purple portable with no backlight. The GameBoy Color was purple, too.

What was I talking about? Oh right, a blue and black DS Lite. There's another picture after the jump.

Japanese Gamers Care About Content, Not the MoneyPosted 12:21pm Thu Jan 17, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: Nintendo Wii, Japan, survey, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS
According to a report on the Dow Jones Newswire, a recent survey has "discovered" that Japanese gamers "care more about the games they want to play than price," as a poll of 3,422 gamers on kakaku.com claims that 49.2% say their primary concern in choosing a new console is that it be "compatible with the games they absolutely want to play."

Here are some figures for those who like numbers.

  • 43% wish to buy the most popular console
  • 6.1% are mostly concerned about price
  • 25% own a Wii
  • 25% own a DS
  • 10% own a PlayStation 3
  • 10% own a PSP
  • 3% own an Xbox 360
  • 28% hope to buy a Wii next
  • 27% hope to buy a PS3 next

I can only assume that 0% are interested in buying an Xbox 360 as their next console, as a figure wasn't given for Microsoft's unit. Maybe they're saving up for a DS or PSP in a new color?

Anybody surprised by this at all?

First Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles ScreenshotsPosted 12:22pm Tue Jan 15, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: screens, Ubisoft, Assassins Creed Altairs Chronicles, Nintendo DS

If you've played through Assassin's Creed you might have been wondering how Ubisoft could shrink that entire visual package to the Nintendo DS and pass go.

Well, wonder no more. Here are some interesting shots of Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles on the DS. It looks like many of the game's mechanics will be present - pickpocketing, eavesdropping, roof-top leaping, etc - but apparently cut-and-pasted icons have been added to the GPS. At the very least, the game should prove entertaining.

GB Review: Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends (DS)Posted 1:06am Sat Dec 29, 2007 by Shiva Stella Tags: Cooking Mama 2, Majesco, Nintendo DS, review, 2 stars

Mama's Posse: Prepare to get served.

Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends offers up most of the same simplistic, addictive gameplay that fans of the series love with a few twists, namely multiplayer action and new recipes. It's a great title for short gaming sessions, definitely tops the cutesy chart, and boasts those same adorable visuals and step-by-step cooking minigames that fans are familiar with. However, Mama's latest expedition feels more like an extension of the original rather than a true sequel and certainly isn't for the traditional hardcore gamer (it's also incredibly easy), but if you're into food and light gameplay (and especially if you haven't played the original) then it's a go; otherwise it's a rent, if that.

score: 2 out of 5

Click here for an explanation of our review and scoring format.

Cooking Mama 2 is yet another easy, pick-up-and-play title from Majesco and is centered around cooking for your Mama; to up the ante the company added new recipes for a total of 80 delicious dishes for the player to experiment with beginning in "Cook with Mama" mode. This mode provides the traditional Cooking Mama experience, featuring every possible step you can imagine in the creation of each of the 80 dishes. Players progress step-by-step via completing recipe minigames, ranging from cracking eggs, stirring ingredients, grilling meats, pouring various liquids, and peeling apples to folding crepes, setting the oven (yes, setting the oven is a minigame), and blowing into the DS mic to cool off food.

Nintendo Facing 'Planning Problems' Due to Wii ShortagePosted 3:56pm Thu Dec 20, 2007 by Shiva Stella Tags: Wii, Nintendo DS, Nintendo, interview, people, Reggie Fils-Aime
Nintendo is reporting that it is having problems "planning for the coming months" (one can only assume they mean advertising campaigns, game development, and manufacturing) due to a crazy demand for its Wii console and DS handheld.

Said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, in a recent Reuters interview: "The level of demand we are facing complicates all of our future business planning. All of that becomes a much tougher exercise until we have supply and demand curves that intersect."

Regarding certain retailers who get it in their heads to bundle the Wii with games that nobody wants yet has to buy in order to get the Wii (I hate you people), Fils-Aime commented that "Retailers have already been given feedback that we are not big fans of that. We think it masks some of the price advantage we have versus our competition and, frankly, the consumer should decide what they want."

When asked if Nintendo was in fact threatening such retailers, Fils-Aime responded, "We don't have to remind retailers of the strength we have right now. We are simply making an observation and that reinforces our point quite nicely with retailers."
